Objective 5

Understand and appreciate the history of the social work profession in the context of contemporary social policy and practice and utilize this knowledge to inform practice. I think that it is imperative for me to understand the history of the profession I am studying. By understanding the Social Work Profession's history on policies, theories utilized, strengths, and weaknesses, it will assist me in becomming a more productice and knowledgeable social worker. By becoming a member of the NASW, I am able to research the beginnings of Social Work.

Understand the forms and mechanisms of oppression and discrimination and apply innovative social change strategies which promote both social and economic justice.In Social Work Practice 3, I had the opportunity to help organize and participate in the first ever Truth Commission in Chattanooga. During this Truth Commission, we documented stories on individuals human right violations. This opportunity gave me insight into other individuals lives and the hardships they endure due to poverty. I also included a powerpoint that I created for Social Work 376 on poverty and how it affects single mothers and their children.
